Thoughtful debate this week by Weald of Kent Labour members about Iranian crisis. Conclusions set out below. Support for Keir Starmer’s refusal to support Trump & Netanyahu’s illegal & avoidable war; calls for de-escalation to restore security for the whole of the Middle East. ... See MoreSee Less

Rumours growing that Katie Lam will defect from Weald of Kent Conservatives to Reform. Last year in a Sunday Times interview she gave only conditional support to the Tories & polls now show she might lose her previously ‘safe’ Weald of Kent seat. On the hard right of the Conservatives she worked as an adviser to Suella Braverman & supported Robert Jenrick’s leadership bid against Kemi Badenoch - so far more likely to be a ‘traitor’ than ‘faithful’ and join Reform’s recycle of Tory turncoats; politicians who want to forget they had anything to do with the Sunak, Truss, & Johnson administrations which they now denounce as having ‘broken Britain’! ... Good to see this Joint Statement on Greenland by NATO allies, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the UK. Time for Europe to stand firm against Trump’s aggression. ... See MoreSee Less

Trump’s forced attempt to takeover Greenland is a clear breach of Article 1 of NATO’s Atlantic Treaty - see below & www.nato.int/en/about-us/official-texts-and-resources/official-texts/1949/04/04/the-north-atlanti.... The US President’s threats to the sovereignty of Greenland & Denmark are entirely unnecessary as they can all be addressed through a 1951 agreement - see: www.state.gov/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/04-806-Denmark-Defense.done_.pdf - and by normal negotiation with NATO allies. The consequences of Trump’s deranged behaviour are powerfully explained in new article in Foreign Affairs. It warns of descent into a ‘barbaric’ new world order in which operations “to kill, steal & destroy are severed from any claim of right”. A world with “no legal order at all” that “has only force guided by one man’s whims”. See: x.com/foreignaffairs/status/2012629502531162512?s=46&t=EMRPs1xvofqhkmtQxbo94A. ... See MoreSee Less

This year will see important decisions about Local Government in Kent. The Government will review options for the creation of new unitary authorities to replace Kent County Council & 12 Borough/District Councils. These reforms should make our local services more efficient and responsive to the community. The option preferred by Weald of Kent Labour is 4D below with 4 new authorities. This is supported by Medway, Canterbury and Ashford Councils. Once the choice is made elections to the new unitary authority are due to be held in May 2027 and become active in 2028. ... With record spending of £7.3 billion to fix the nation’s roads the Department for Transport has launched a great initiative to map progress by local authority area. See: www.gov.uk/government/publications/local-road-maintenance-ratings/local-road-maintenance-ratings-.... Kent County Council is rated amber but has received £54 million to help fund its pothole blitz. We have campaigned hard for action to fix our pothole plagued roads so look forward to an improved rating soon. ... See MoreSee Less
