Mike Tapp Labour candidate for Dover & Deal spoke to Weald of Kent Labour members in Staplehurst on January 30th. A former soldier and public servant with the National Crime Agency Mike highlighted the key issues in his campaign to win this important target seat for Labour at the next General Election. He tackled the Tory failure to deal with the cost of living crisis, the NHS backlog, the lack of a viable plan to curb illegal boat crossings and the impact of the new passport checks in Dover which threaten to cause disruption across Kent. He reported that support for his campaign was very encouraging but there was no room for complacency as Dover & Deal is a ‘must win’ seat for Labour to return to Government at the next election.
The well attended meeting at the Staplehurst Community Centre also discussed the Weald of Kent’s own campaign priorities in 2024 which will be a busy year of elections; these include wards in Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells Borough Councils, for the Kent Police and Crime Commissioner, and a likely General Election.
As a follow up to Mike Tapp’s visit some Weald of Kent members visited Deal in early February to support his campaign. Our CLP Secretary David Ward and Youth Officer Carter Powell joined the Shadow Attorney General Emily Thornberry MP in a canvassing session with Mike and Dover & Deal members.
